We forge the Damascus completely ourselves. You will learn the basic techniques of forging and the art of Damascus production with two special steel types (1.2767 and 1.2842). We work traditionally with coal fire (gas is also possible by arrangement) and carry out all folds ourselves.

Forging Course Day 1 – Creating the Damascus Blank

On the first day of the forging course, the main focus is on creating the Damascus blade. We start with two special steel types (1.2767 and 1.2842) and create the forge package consisting of 5-7 strips of different steel types. The package of approximately 10-14 steel strips is then welded by me. Afterwards, you forge out the package – it is heated and forged under the hammer. When the package reaches a length of about 25 centimeters, we can divide it into 3, 5, or 7 equal strips and weld them back together. This is done again to achieve a good number of layers (typically between 90 and 300 layers).

Forging Course Day 2 – Grinding & Polishing

On the second day, less forging takes place – the knife forging is almost complete. We will work more with wood and polish a lot of metal and wood. After the blade has been soft-annealed overnight, lighter machining of the blade is now possible. The blade now gets its final shape through grinding and polishing. Then the handle is crafted from the wood you selected and mounted.

Course Details

Having a very specific idea for a knife is great and we will do our best to realize it. However, if you want your knife in absolute perfection, you should carefully consider whether a course is right for you. If you need a specific design or perfect measurements, you may be better served by ordering it as a custom knife. The course is about taking home a very good, finished, and handmade knife after two days – with all its individual characteristics and the story of your own making.
